The Artist UnSEWn Series presents Sugar by Erin McMorris

Sugar, my latest collection,  is all about what summer means to me: gardens and ice cream!

I've been lucky enough to have a small community garden plot in a truly eclectic neighborhood lot. In our densely populated neighborhood, it provides a large outdoors space that most of us don’t have. I enjoy it enough to get my hands dirty, even if I don’t necessarily consider myself a “gardener”: Last year, I think I produced exactly five cherry tomatoes despite my best attempts, and I admit I pleaded with my friend’s five-year-old daughter to please leave me at least one strawberry before she made off with the rest of them. And sometimes, let’s be honest, “gardening" is really a code word for “drinking wine outside and chatting with neighbors.” But this special outdoors space, and the community around it—oh yeah, and the actual gardening part of it—has been an inspiration to me.

And then we come to my second summer inspiration: the ice cream shop across the street. I love sugar—both the sweet treats themselves, and this fabric collection, that is, but mostly the treats. If I could eat ice cream every day, I would. That waffle-cone smell hits me as I ride my bike past every day. I do enjoy watching the dazed expressions on faces as they totter out holding giant scoops of goodness. Not only are ice cream cones fun to eat, but they’re also fun to draw. All the different cone and scoop styles make it really playful!

Unfortunately, our garden plot has been sold to make way for a new development. This is our last year. It’s sad, but I’m glad I got to enjoy the garden while lasted. I’m already planning on a final stroll, armed with my gardening supplies and potted raspberry bush to bring home, for a celebratory cone. I can’t think of a better way to pay tribute to my two summer loves.
